RoamAbout extends Firefox to make your favorite web applications just a mouse-click away while browsing on any web site. The applications display as an overlay on the current page so there is no need to go to a different tab for each such application. Or install a specialized toolbar for each web service that you like. The usage is very simple. Click on an icon in the tray display that appears as an overlay on any page (you can put this away when you don't need it), and the application is displayed as an overlay on the current page. If you have selected a piece of text on the page, many apps automatically use that selection to display relevant material whether it is maps, news, videos or photos. The platform is built with security and privacy in mind. It does not log or keep track of which sites you visit nor does it allow third-party applications on it to violate your privacy or security. Each application runs in its own sandbox using the full protection mechanisms available in the browser and they DO NOT execute in any privileged mode in the browser. So they do not have access to any other application or the page you are on except as allowed by the user. The apps are disabled on secure sites to avoid any potential problems from third-party applications. As a developer, you can bring a web service into RoamAbout as quickly as you can design an icon for it using the tools at developer.vysr.com. Google gadgets run as-is in RoamAbout. You can extend them to make them contextual to the page using the APIs. There is no fee to develop and publish apps on RoamAbout regardless of whether the apps are free or commercial.
