DIM SUM Description

DIM SUM is a Java-based utility for simulating individual migration events, recording the geographical locations of all relevant individuals and ancestor-descendant relationships. DIM SUM does not rely on backward simulation of genealogical relationships using coalescent assumptions, as do some currently available simulators.An individual-based approach has at least three advantages over coalescent-based simulations for the testing of analytical methods:· DIM SUMdoes not predispose coalescent-based analytical methods to outperform other methods when analyzing simulated data.· DIM SUM allows simulation parameters to be based on estimates of individual life history traits. · DIM SUM generates data on the exact locations of individuals, which is necessary for someanalytical methods.DIM SUM is a cross-platform utility capable of running on any operating system that comes with Java support (e.g. Mac OS X, Windows, Linux).
