Proactive Sleep Alarm Clock Description

Winner of the $10,000 Schoof's prize for innovation and creativity, featured on CBS early show, ranked the top 10 app of the week by Gizmodo, and used as a scientific research tool on the effects of sleep deprivation and the circadian component of sleep. Proactive Sleep uses various behavioral tools designed with the science of sleep in mind. This includes personalized feedback on the components of sleep, vigilance games to assess your grogginess, ambient music to play at night, and motor and auditory stimulation to help you wake-up. Other applications have pointed out that sleep stage affects how refreshed you feel in the morning, claiming that by waking up in a lighter phase of sleep you can feel more refreshed. While technically this is true, there are serious issues to this claim, especially in doing so by measuring body movements. REM sleep is a lighter stage of sleep than deep sleep, yet in REM sleep your body is almost completely paralyzed (with exception to your eyes). Additionally, the more you sleep the lighter sleep gets and even if you were to wake up in a lighter phase of sleep this only affects how awake you feel in short-term. How refreshed you feel is largely affected by two things: sleep amount and time of day. These components of sleep have a major impact on the severity of "sleep inertia," or in other words, grogginess experienced upon awakening from sleep. Sleep amount has an obvious impact on how tired you are throughout the day and how easy it is for you to fall asleep at night. Proactive Sleep measures this component of sleep every time you set your alarm clock. You then get personalized feedback on how much you are sleeping based on a sleep goal that you can set. Proactive Sleep empowers you to optimize your sleep schedule by enabling you to assess your unique sleep needs and to see the effects of changing your sleep patterns. Proactive Sleep also tracks another not so obvious, yet equally important component of sleep called the circadian component. The circadian component is related to time of day and is by-in-large modulated by exposure to sunlight. The biological system behind the circadian component involves sensors located in the eye that can detect sunlight even when your eyes are closed. These sensors send signals to a part of the brain that controls the release of melatonin: a powerful neurotransmitter that affects your energy level. If sunlight is detected, melatonin is inhibited, and that is the mechanism that helps us wake up in the morning when the sun comes out. What sets Proactive Sleep apart from other sleep applications is that it is built with consideration to scientific findings about sleep proven to affect how refreshed you feel in the morning, how much energy you have throughout the day, and your ability to fall asleep.
