HL7 Anon Description

The HL7 Anon application was designed to remove personally identifiable information from a collection of HL7 messages. No guarantee is made that all private information is removed the processed records. By using this software you agree that any records processed will be checked by yourself before being shared with any individual and that the author of this software is absolved from all liability related from the use of the software. What we attempt to do is remove any information from the HL7 fields listed at the end of this document. In doing so that information is captured, and later searched for, so that if it appears again it is likewise removed with a identical string. The algorithm for removing the message is that any alphabetic character is changed to 'X', any numeric to '8', any space remains as is and anything else becomes '*'. This ensures that applications checking for certain types of fields will not be unduly taxed, yet any record will essentially become impossible to tie to a real person. That's the theory. In practice a clever enough person may still be able to extrapolate data, so no matter what share the information this utility provides with extreme care.
