Editor's review: This is a software tool that will enable setting up a security surveillance system through a mix of web cams, IP cameras, wired and wireless. The program is a universal application for surveillance. It is able to handle wireless and wired IP webcams, Television-boards, capture boards, power-line, and USB webcams. Video from multiple cameras are available for display on the local and/or a remote machine. The display through the web interface is in the same form on either machine and thus the local security or the remote monitoring station sees exactly the same set of videos. Users see MPEG coded video and have complete control of the program over the network. It is possible to have no monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached to the machine at the surveillance/local machine. Modular structure has been mentioned by the developers as a feature that improves reliability. This needs testing over an extended period, if you are planning to adopt this system. However, theoretically this will help as independent modules of the application can be restarted without affecting others and a watchdog timer can ensure no module stops permanently. For example if the `record` unit fails, `watchdog` starts it instantly and users don`t notice anything because they are viewing video using a `playback` component. The recording is in a loop, it erases the previous recording and starts over again so that storage requirement is not endless. Recording can be initiated by an event happening such as a face being recognized, motion being detected in the detection zone or on a fixed schedule.
