ClamAV/SOSDG Description
ClamAV/SOSDG represented an initiative to migrate the ClamAV engine from UNIX/Linux to Windows using Cygwin. For many years, it was appraised and used all over the world, but the project came to an end in 2009, when the official ClamAV edition for Windows was released. The ClamAV antivirus solution was launched and maintained for UNIX systems exclusively for a long time. It wasn’t until 2005 that the SOSDG team decided to port it to Windows, using the compatibility layer provided by Cygwin. The project lasted for a couple of years and performed an impeccable job, but once the ClamAV team decided to make an official release for the Windows platform as well, the development of ClamAV/SOSDG ceased. In fewer words, the application in question is no longer usable, valid or recommended, because it is completely out of date. During installation, it retrieves and downloads the latest antivirus databases, but the result is always the same: you are prompted with a message that the engine is out of date, after which the application closes. In order to prove the purpose it serves, we decided to download the latest ClamAV virus databases ourselves and to copy these files inside the installation directory. Our efforts turned out to be useless, because we got the same error message. The conclusion is that there’s no point in using this application anymore. Instead, you should install the latest official ClamAV release, as well as the updated antivirus databases, for maximum protection. What’s more, it’s highly unlikely that ClamAV/SOSDG will receive updates ever again, once an official ClamAV for Windows already exists and seems to keep up with the UNIX releases.
