portscanner Description

PortScanner is a lightweight and portable piece of software designed to scan an IP address for any open ports. It does not contain advanced options or configuration parameters, so it can be handled by all types of users, even the ones with little or no experience in networking utilities. Portability advantages Since installation is not a prerequisite, you can drop the executable file in a custom directory on the hard disk and just click it to run. There is also the possibility to save PortScanner to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. What's more, the tool does not create new entries in the Windows registry or Start menu, leaving no traces behind after its removal. Simple and intuitive interface The user-friendly GUI is made from a normal window with a plain interface. It is not visually stunning but its structure is easy enough to be figured out even by the casual user. All you have to do is specify an IP address in your LAN, along with a port range. Scanning starts with the simple click of a button. In addition, you can use the Ping and Netstat functions, as well as ask PortScanner to write a log file that you can later consult for any issues. Apart from a button for clearing the screen, there are no other notable options available here. PortScanner does not put a strain on computer performance, as it runs on a pretty low quantity of CPU and RAM. It is very responsive to commands and works smoothly, without triggering Windows to hang, crash or pop up error dialogs. We have not come across any issues throughout our evaluation. Conclusion It may not be feature-rich, but PortScanner delivers a simple solution to identifying any open ports across an IP address. Thanks to its intuitive UI and options, it shouldn't impose any difficulties to any user. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on March 10th, 2014
