USEC Radix Description
USEC Radix is a small but powerful tool whose purpose is to detect and remove rootkits from your computer, in order to restore your system's security. Rootkits are a type of malware that infiltrates PCs to record keystrokes (e.g. email accounts, login credentials, word processing tools). This information is sent and used by hackers to break into your system's security and run malicious programs in the background. This is a portable piece of kit, so USEC Radix does not require installation and can be run on any computer from a USB flash drive or other external storage unit. Moreover, the Windows Registry contents are not modified by new entries, and leftover files do not exist on the hard disk after program removal. USEC Radix is wrapped in a standard interface, consisting of a regular window with multiple tabs. While the tool clearly does not excel in the visual department, it offers users a wide range of options concerning rootkit scans. A one-click checkup can be triggered, focusing on hidden files, Registry entries, processes and services, alternate data streams, a self-test, the MBR section, object routines, patched modules, together with IRP, SDT, IDT and IAT hooks, depending on which objects you select for the scan. The rest of the tabs give you access to a detailed report on the scan of each aforementioned object. This report can be saved to a LOG or TXT file for further evaluation. Plus, you can specify the log file path and quarantine directory, create an exclusion list and enable pool tagging. USEC Radix barely uses CPU and system memory, so it doesn't put a strain on the computer's overall performance. It has a good response time and may take a while to complete a scan job, depending on the size of your hard disk. But no error dialogs have been shown in our tests and the tool did not hang or crash. All in all, USEC Radix comes packed with tools to please the entire audience, especially power users. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on June 14th, 2013
