StarCat Description

StarCat is a handy tool that has been built using the Java programming language and comes as a star catalog, 3-dimensional (3D) visualization, and star mapping utility. For StarCat the universe consists of (star) systems, which have a location in 3D space and can have any number of bodies (luminous or dark) located at, or orbiting that location. Any body can have other bodies orbiting it in turn. Main features: StarCat offers a tree-structured view of the star catalog, with properties for each item in the database displayed in a floating window. The stars themselves are displayed in a 3D view whose center position you can change, zoom in and out of, and rotate as desired. Selected stars will show lines between them (within configurable limits). There is a filter to help you focus on specific stars by hiding (or merely dimming) stars that don't match your criteria. A structural view of a planetary system is available to view and manipulate the orbital positions and relationships of a star system's bodies. StarCat can attach arbitrary data to any element (system, star, planet, moon, etc), including free-form notes of any size to help meet virtually any need. For those interested in using StarCat to maintain fictional data, StarCat supports the creation of travel routes between stars, boundaries of influence that you could use to map out borders between star empires, and can generate star maps from any vantage point.
