Smooth Player Description

Smooth Player is a Java-based audio player that offers support for many popular formats such as FLAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, M3U and PLS. It comes packed with standard options that can be tweaked by any type of users, regardless of their previous experience with such apps. Installation is not a requirement, which makes Smooth Player portable. You can drop the JNLP file anywhere on the hard drive and just click it to run. There is also the possibility of storing the tool on a pen drive or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any computer effortlessly, as long as it has Java installed. An important aspect to take into account is that the Windows registry is not updated with new keys. However, it creates an INI file in the same location as the JNLP at exit. The interface is based on a rectangular window that has the look of a typical audio player. Its buttons are quite small, though. Audio files can be loaded from a local, network or removable location by using either the file browser, folder view or drag-and-drop support. It is also possible to open URLs, like online radio. Standard audio player controls include shuffle and repeat mode, bar seeking, and volume adjustment. In addition, you can view MPEG information on a selected item (e.g. length, size, sample rate, channel mode, VBR), as well as configure an equalizer or load presets. Smooth Player uses moderate-to-high CPU and RAM, has a fair response time and did not crash or pop up error dialogs throughout our evaluation. However, it failed to play some of the tracks we inserted into the playlist. On top of that, it is not possible to resize the main frame. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on January 15th, 2014
