Side Desk Description

The Side Desk application was designed to be a desktop utility which can be considered as part clipboard, part desktop extension, part thumbnail creation or graphic resizer! Its primary function is to provide a temporary holding area where items can be collated for either immediate or future use rather than using the desktop or a folder. Files are not copied nor moved nor shortcut links created avoiding the problems of duplication and relocation. Files are represented by thumbnails. File collections can be saved and reloaded when required. As Side Desk uses thumbnails to represent files, it can also be used to create thumbnails from single or multiple graphic files and save them to disk. Side Desk will accept a wide range of graphic formats. As thumbnail size is adjustable, it is also feasible to use Side Desk to resize graphics. Side Desk opens as a simple empty window. There is a popup menu on the right mouse button to access most options and functions. Setting options. The background colour can be changed from options and the amount of transparency varied using the CTRL key + mouse wheel. The color of non-graphic thumbnails can also be set in options. The maximum dimension of a thumbnail in pixels and other options used when saving multiple thumbnails are set from the options page. The size applies to the largest dimension, the thumbnail drawn proportional to the original size. Smaller sized graphics are not expanded to the maximum size. When graphic files are added, the default method of drawing the thumbnail is a simple stretch draw. This is reasonably quick but the quality isn't particularly good. Resampling provides better quality but takes longer. Lanczos3 is used to resample. Using Side Desk Files are dragged onto Side Desk from Explorer. Folders and multiple files can be dropped. A thumbnail of the maximum size specified will be created for each file dropped. (See above for resampling or stretch draw.) If the file is a graphic, the thumbnail will be that of the graphic file. If not, the thumbnail will be of the icon for that format and the file name. Thumbnails can be moved around with the mouse. When files are added the thumbnails are placed in random positions. If there are few files, they can be easily moved so all are visible. If not, align all thumbnails will align thumbnails vertically so all can be easily seen by scrolling the window. Random spread will do the reverse and randomly place them in the open window. CTRL+C will copy the full window to clipboard as a collage of thumbnails. Individual thumbnails or all thumbnails can be refreshed. If the CTRL key is held down when the menu item is clicked, thumbnails will be drawn using resampling otherwise simple stretch draw will be used. If the maximum dimension has been changed, the thumbnail size will also change. Individual thumbnails can also be sharpened. Double clicking a thumbnail will open the file with the default executable. The thumbnail or the file can be copied to clipboard. Each thumbnail, individually or collectively can also be saved. Thumbnail options for saving multiple thumbnails can be set in options. The list of thumbnail file names can be saved to a dat file and reloaded. More than one dat file can be loaded at a time. On loading, thumbnails will be recreated according to selected options. NOTE Thumbnails are not saved, only the file names. You can run multiple copies of the program if you want to. Options are saved in an ini file with the executable so if you do run multiple copies from the same folder, each will read and update the same ini file in that folder. If you intend to run multiple copies with different options, you must put each in a seperate folder. Just copy the executable file and create a new shortcut. The program can be run from a memory stick or other suitable external sources.
