Editor's review: SQLcheck is an easy-to-use performance dashboard for SQL Server. It makes the task of SQL programmers and users of SQL Server easier by enabling them to monitor performance over time. Pros: SQLcheck runs as a secure screensaver that displays real-time performance and diagnostic information. This information is displayed not only for the SQL Server, but also the database, hardware and the operating system. It monitors key performance metrics, while providing a view of processes, agent jobs, and errors as part of an erro log. It is fully compatible with SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005. The hardware related information it monitors are the disk transfer rate and network transfer rate. Operating System information includes memory paging rate and processor utilization. Finally the database information includes transaction rate, buffer cache hit ratio, memory grants pending, average latch wait time, average lock wait time, lock timeouts rate, database allocation size, database allocation percent, largest tables, SQL process list, SQL error log, SQL agent jobs, and SQL server configuration. It has a nice interface that displays all required information in graphs and as dashboard style dials. Cons: The main concern is one of utility. It performs the function of monitoring SQL Server functions very well, but one isn’t sure if this is required on a day to day basis (this is a question for people who use SQL on a daily basis). Other than that there are some minor issues with the interface: it does not allow for any customization – the way that the information is displayed is good but sometimes more information is desirable. Overall: 5 stars. This is a really good tool for monitoring SQL performance. It has minor issues in the interface but these are not such that they would discourage users from using it.
