Qwertick Description

Qwertick is a small-sized and portable piece of software that enhances your keyboard's functionality by adding the sound effect of an old typewriter. This fun utility can keep you sharp during those boring days at work, and even help you surprise a friend when using the computer. The advantages of portable appsSince installation is not a requirement, you can drop the executable file in any part of the hard disk and just click the executable to run. There is also the possibility to save Qwertick to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any PC with minimum effort and without previously installing anything. An important aspect to take into account is that the Windows registry and Start menu do not get updated with new entries, and no additional files are created on the hard disk, so there are no traces left behind after the app's removal. Quick accessibility via the system trayOnce started, Qwertick creates an icon in the system tray area and immediately applies the new sound effects to your keyboard. All keys have the same sound when typing them, except for the Enter key which mimics the carriage return. Clicking the system tray icon brings up a small window that allows users to mute the typerwriter effects without actually exiting the software application. Performance and drawbacksAs expected, Qwertick has minimal impact on computer performance, since it runs on low CPU and memory. It has a great response time to commands and worked smoothly during our evaluation, without causing Windows to hang, crash or pop up error dialogs. On the other hand, the tool's functions cannot be restricted to selected environments. The sound effects apply to the operating system at a global level, and it is not possible to confine them to word processors, for instance. Moreover, similar applications offer multiple typewriter sound effects, while Qwertick has only two. ConclusionAlthough it does not provide customization options, Qwertick remains a fun utility for enhancing the typewriting experience. We must also take into account that it has not been updated for a while. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on April 9th, 2014
