PracticeMill Description

PracticeMill is a program that creates numerous practice tools to help students at all levels of education achieve mastery and fluency in any subject area. It may even be used in professional training. The application consists of two separate modules--an editor and a viewer. Teachers use the editor to create banks of questions and to design how those questions will be displayed. These questions can incorporate text, sound, pictures, drawings, and even video. The student can then work through the questions using the viewer. The editor is also capable of printing decks of flashcards (front and back), practice sheets, and exams. The viewer offers several response modes (multiple choice, type-response, and say answer), types of response feedback (display correct answers, explanation, instruction, etc.), and ways to monitor performance (accuracy--percent correct and fluency--responses per minute). When used in a multi-user environment, individual student accounts are created and may be configured to require personalized user names and passwords. With this feature, it is possible for students to progress independently and to monitor their individual performances over time. The viewer may also be configured to send performance data through an Internet connection to accommodate students practising at remote locations. When the computerized flashcard viewer is used either for practice or testing, the editor gains the functionality to monitor the performance of each individual as well as the entire group. Also, since the viewer module stores responses to each question on disk, it becomes possible for the teacher to closely examine errors made by the students to every individual question and perform classical item analysis to identify topics that need further training or items that need to be revised.
