Name it - Keys, Notes, Intervals & Chords Description

Name it - Keys, Notes, Intervals & Chords is a suite of 4 programs that should help you improve your sight reading. So what exactly do these programs do for your sight reading ? All programs work with a score and a time-clock. We must make our 'move' to the next note, interval or chord within a set time period. And that's the way to get your reflexes going. Sight-reading is nothing more than training our reflexes. In order to do this we have to fight the time-clock. In the case of real sheet music, a good aid would be the metronome, but since we're only training you to identify keys, notes, intervals and chords as quickly as possible, a time-clock will suffice. Next to that we find it important to know exactly what you see and once you're skilled in recognizing at sight, you can test your newly acquired skills in real sheet music with a metronome. Reflex or time-trial training is an absolute necessity if you are serious about becoming a good, or better sight-reader and our 4 little programs will help you with that. First, let's explain the 4 programs a bit better... 1) Name it - Keys - This little program will help you get familiar with the key you are playing in. The first level will drill you on major and minor key signatures. Once you advance to level 2, you will be drilled on all the primary (major) and secondary (minor) chords of all keys. This will improve your sight reading (in combination with 'Name it - Chords'), but it will also help your improvising if you ever plan to do that. The last level consist of a scale degree drill, which will first of all teach you the notes of the scale of that particular key, but it could also help you transposing songs to another key. 2) Name it - Notes - Many programs exist of this type, however our experience is that they often only drill you on the C-scale, or even only the Treble Clef. Therefore we have created a program that will drill you on the notes in all major keys. Being able to name notes is not the most important thing in sight reading, as you can read on the homepage, but at any point in (reading) music you should be able to do it. After completing this program there will be NOT ONE note that you can not name! 3) Name it - Intervals! - This is one of the most important programs of the four. Knowing intervals is indispensable if you ever want to be a good sight reader! Seeing a melody or baseline as (a set of) intervals will first of all increase your eye-span, but it will also increase your reading speed. It is a lot easier and faster to identify a set of intervals than having to identify each note seperately. It will drill you on both harmonic and melodic intervals. Be aware that sight reading is not only a visual skill, but it has also a physical aspect; if you can instantly recognize an interval visually, your fingers should also 'know' what that interval feels like. This physical aspect of sight reading will not be taught by this program, we are developing a 'Play it'-series, to help you acquire this physical skill. The release date for this series will be around juli 2006. If you can't wait that long, grab yourself some real sheet music! Check out the support section for tips and tricks to improve/increase reading speed. 4) Name it - Chords! - Chords are constructed of intervals! For example a C major chord will always look the same! Of course depending of the key it can have certain accidentals, but the notes will always have the same distances on the clef! When you know this, it will make it a lot easier to identify chords at sight, without having to 'disect' it note for note.
