Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Patch: Index Server Search Function Contains Unchecked Buffer Description

This update addresses the "Index Server Search Function Contains Unchecked Buffer" security vulnerability in Windows NT 4.0 computers running Index Server 2.0, and is discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-700. Download now to prevent a malicious user from running unauthorized code on your server, or causing your server to fail. This vulnerability exists because Index Server 2.0 has an unchecked buffer (a temporary data storage area that has a limited capacity but no specification for the amount of information that can be written into it) in the code that processes search requests. A specifically malformed search request from a malicious user can cause the buffer to overflow, which might allow the malicious user to run unauthorized code on the server, or cause the server to fail. For more information about this vulnerability, read Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-025.
