Melody Generator Description

Melody Generator is a Windows software application designed specifically for helping you generate melodies by positioning notes on a staff and tweaking several audio parameters. This is a Java-based utility so you should install the required environment on your computer before running the tool. Portable programYou can take advantage of the fact the app is portable and run it directly on your computer without having to follow the steps included in a classical installation process. Plus, the program doesn’t store configuration data and write entries in your Windows registry. It can be copied on any USB flash drive or other removable devices and uninstalled by simply removing the downloaded files. User interfaceThe GUI may look a bit crowded and overwhelming at a first glance but this only because it embeds a comprehensive suite of features in a single layout. The main panel is made up of several smart windows with each one integrating features for controlling play, time, pitch and model-specific parameters, melody construction, melody store, as well as staff. The tool also offers support for a help manual and short description for each of the aforementioned panels in case you cannot decode the parameters on your own. Playing capabilitiesMelody Generator gives you the possibility to play or stop the current song, repeat the last playing, listen to a combination of sounds produced by different parameters (melody, root, beat and skeleton), set the tempo, pick the instrument and bass used for the melody, as well as enable or disable a set of tools that are used for playing the tones a little louder and streaming only the rhythm produced by the melody. What’s more, you can make the application play one note on the staff, fragment that includes the first and last clicked note, or part that begins the playing mode from a user-defined location on the staff. Tweak time, pitch and model-specific parametersYou can adjust the meter, number of syncopation and bars, change the rhythmical density (the number of notes/measure), as well as add rhythmical constraints (some bars with the same rhythm or all bars with the same rhythm). When it comes to modifying the pitch parameters, you are allowed to set the key and mode, change the range of the song (the lowest and highest note that may occur), as well as select a harmonic progression. Model-specific parameters give you the freedom to alter the chord tones and turn on or off the tone repetition, leap and chromatic tones. Melody construction and staff optionsMelody Generator gives you the option to define a new melody by setting up the rhythm, gap, harmony and pitch. Plus, you can import data from MG2 file format, undo or redo your editing actions and use keyboard shortcuts for performing various actions. When you right-click on a melody on the staff, you are given quick access to a set of features that you can work with for tweaking the song. You may duplicate, remove or move parts from the song, duplicate the entire melody, as well as export the generated song to MIDI file format. Bottom lineAll in all, Melody Generator comes with an interesting feature pack for helping you create and export tonal melodies. The output quality is very good but we have experienced some bugs while testing the app as it closed several times. Reviewed by Ana Marculescu, last updated on October 29th, 2014
