GigaEdit Description

GigaEdit is a tiny and portable application that aids users in editing large-sized plain text documents, offering support for a bunch of useful options, such as finding the characters' total occurrences and word positions. Since installation is not a prerequisite, you can extract the program files anywhere on the hard disk and run the executable directly. An alternative is to save GigaEdit to a USB flash drive or similar storage device, so you can run it on any workstation easily and without prior installers. Note that the device must not be write-protected in order for the utility to work properly. What's worth keeping in mind is that the app does not add new entries to the Windows registry or Start menu. Although the interface is not particularly intuitive, its options are easy to navigate. TXT files can be opened using the file browser or drag-and-drop support. Three buttons placed on the bottom part of the frame let you immediately find out the frequency of all characters in the text, along with repetitions and word positions. A plain text document containing the required information is created for each of these options, in the same directory as the opened file. Unfortunately, you do not have the possibility of selecting particular words or characters to find out the aforementioned details about them. It is possible to skip integer values, jump to a particular position, use a search function, prepare pages for printing, as well as format font settings. Plus, you can save the changes to a new plain text document. As expected from such a small utility, GigaEdit barely uses CPU and RAM, so it does not burden the overall performance of the computer or disrupt normal program activity. We have not come across any issues in our tests, since the tool did not hang or crash. It clearly loads large plain text documents faster than Notepad, for instance. The tool should please all types of users, thanks to its intuitive layout and overall simplicity. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on October 31st, 2013
