The program recognizes the characters from the images of characters on the scanned documents. When completely converted the document becomes editable. Thus the characters in documents become fully selectable, and searchable. Free Image OCR has an optical recognition engine. It can thus convert scanned documents into a text document without problems. The image formats this tool is compatible with include JPG/JPEG, TIF, TIFF, BMP, GIF, PNG, EMF, WMF, JPE, ICO, JFIF, PCX, PSD, PCD, TGA and many more. This tool includes a text editor which allows you to edit the OCR result text without a tool like MS Word. You are able to add or correct text, clear text, remove line breaks, copy all texts to clipboard and export text into MS word for other usages. Free Image OCR has preview functionality for users to open, view, and print any PDF documents on windows operating systems. Metadata information like title, author, subject, etc. can be added to your PDF files. The PDF previewer supports zoom in/out and Fit Width/Height/Page. Buttons like First, Previous, Next & Last buttons help navigation of documents quite easily. While the developers claim more than 99% accuracy, for large documents the editing load could become substantial. Simple image enhancement and rotation, etc. would have been useful as the quality of images and alignment of the scanned pages could have significant effect on recognition accuracy.
