File System Security Viewer Description

The FSSV name stands for File System Security Viewer. FSSV was designed to be a simple console Win32 application that displays in details security information for file system objects (files and directories). This utility is intended primarily for software developers who design Windows NT applications that manipulate file and directory security. For example, it is interesting to see how setting the same access rights for a directory with Windows Explorer and CACLS utility produces two different sets of access-control entries (at least in Windows NT 4.0 SP6). To use FSSV you must be a member of Administrators group or any group that has the "Manage auditing and security log" privilege. This is imposed by the Windows NT security architecture, not by the author of FSSV. FSSV runs from the command prompt. Type "fssv" followed by the names of one or more files and/or directories. Wildcards in file/directory names are supported. Each line in "Permissions" and "Auditing" sections corresponds to a single ACE Access Control Entry). Run fssv.exe without arguments to see explanation of single-character flags that appear in the output.
