DataPreparator is a software application that is able to handle a large amount of data in order to explore and prepare it for data analysis and data mining. It comes with several techniques for processing and altering data, such as cleaning, scaling, attribute selection, missing values, statistics, visualization, balancing, and sampling. This is a Java-based program so you need to install the working environment on your computer in order to deploy the utility. User interfaceYou are welcomed by a well-organized set of features which allows you to check out a list of operators that can be applied to data, draw an operator tree, and work with text area for displaying messages and data source selection options. Importing/exporting, cleaning and combining data The tool lets you import information from ARFF, DATA, CSV or plain text file format. Additionally, it gives you the possibility to alter data before importing it in the main panel by removing characters (e.g. double characters, single quotes, line terminator), replacing strings and regular expressions, and changing attribute values in terms of attribute separator, missing value symbol, and maximum number of integer and nominal labels. Furthermore, the program is able to read data from a database table using the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), as well as from XLS files. When it comes to exporting, you may save the model to MDL file format or export data to an image file (GIF, BMP, JPG, WBMP). Data cleaning tasks can be used for removing characters, replacing text and converting dates while data integration refers to appending cases from a file, database table or XLS worksheet to the end of the current data set, merging a sorted data set with another one into a single file, appending columns, joining two files by a common key attribute, as well as splitting columns and rows. Data reduction, transformation, and plotsDataPreparator helps you apply data reduction using sampling options and record selection, while data transformation is used for processing a series of transformations and creating a model. In order to visualize data (numeric, nominal and mixed attributes) you can work with univariate, bivariate, conditional or matrix plots, univariate charts, stacked bar charts, dependency tree and parallel coordinates. File utilities and output optionsThe application implements several utilities for file manipulation, namely data set operations (create data sets, generate missing values and work with time series), row options (append, balance, merge, sort, split) and column functions (e.g. add columns, change names, encode, join or split data). Last but not least, you can check out statistics with the attributes in the data set and two-dimensional tables. Bottom lineAll in all, DataPreparator comes with a comprehensive feature pack that’s waiting to be discovered but you should take into consideration that the data preparation operations are not highly intuitive, so you may spend some time experimenting with its features.
