CPUload Description

CPUload application was designed to be a small tool that shows your CPU usage history. Try it while playing an MP3, burning a CD or browsing the web, you'll be surprised to see how much CPU is actually used. How CPUload works? it creates a Win32 idle priority thread, and checks how much time the CPU spends into the thread. Windows gives CPU cycles to this idle thread when no other application has anything to do. That can happen for example if other applications are waiting for a keyboard entry, a mouse click, or the hard drive to access some data. So this thread will eat up all your computer leftover CPU power (which is wasted anyway if CPUload is not running). Once CPUload knows how much time was spent in the idle thread, it can figure how much time the CPU was actually used for useful stuff. CPUload uses very little CPU by itself, so your computer should be mostly unaffected when it is running. But if you run CPUload in WinXP, you'll see that XP's task manager CPU usage indicator jumps to 100%. That normal. From XP's point of view, the CPU cycles are all allocated (since CPUload eats up those cycles that nobody else want). For the sake of completeness, I want to mention that I see one drawback in CPUload's way of operation: if another application runs a thread in idle priority too, it'll compete with CPUload for CPU cycles. So the competing application's idle thread will run slower. That's usually fine since it could not expect to get any guaranteed processing power by asking for idle priority.
