AssemblyToVisio Description

AssemblyToVisio was developed to be a small tool that fulfills the need that arises when one wants to update his/her design docs with the up-to-date UML diagrams which would provide the reader with detailed code map, illustrating the classes, their properties and methods, and relationships between them. Visio 2003 seems as the perfect tool for achieving this, and Visual Studio 2003 even has the reverse-engineering feature which generates the UML shapes out of the C# code. But, VS 2003 only generates classes in so called Model Explorer view, and it doesn't show class relationships (neither inheritance nor references). AssemblyToVisio tries to fix that shortcomings. Manually dragging/dropping shapes and then connecting them wasn't an option for me, I have hundreds of classes in my code, it would take ages to produce diagrams this way. Also, there's no way (or I couldn't find it) of inserting .NET Framework classes into diagrams - a must, if I want to illustrate how my code is using .NET Framework and how it leverages it's goodies. What is needed is the tool which would allow one for selecting the subset of his/her classes and then generate the Visio diagram for them having classes, methods, properties and relationships, so this diagram can be directly embedded into design document. That's what AssemblyToVisio tool does. To use the tool: 1) Have Visio 2003 Professional installed 2) Enable macros in Visio (they're disabled by default) - set it to ask before executing macro (just to be safe) it can be done by going Tools/Options/Security tab/Macro Security... button/Security level tab/Medium radio button 3) Install AssemblyToVisio by running its Setup 4) Copy C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\AssemblyToVisio.vsd to folder of your choice and open it there 5) From the Tools menu of Visio select Macros/Macro... (or use Alt-F8 shortcut), and then run AssemblyToVisioReverseEngineer.Module1.ReverseEngineerAssembly macro - AssemblyToVisio form should open 6) There's two listboxes on the form with one edit field and two editing buttons (Add and Remove) each. The upper listbox keeps the list of regular expressions which are used for filtering the class names the user is interested in. The lower listbox keeps the list of paths to assemblies the classes reside in. 7) Populate the regular expressions list with expressions of your choice (there must be at least one) - e.g use .*Collection to see all collection classes 8) Populate assembly paths list - for instance add C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\System.dll to it 9) Click Generate button in right lower corner of the form 10) Enjoy the diagrams!
