Lebanon is a meltingpot of many cultures full of antagonisms. In the capital Beirutalone, about two million people belonging to more than 18 religious groups share anarea of 100 square kilometers. It is mainly the young who have to take the challengeof creating and shaping Beirut as well as their personal future against the backgroundof the fragile peace. For example, round 43% (Germany: 25%) of the enhabitants areyounger than 25 years, they represent a main part of the population in Lebanon. Whatvisions, ideals and role models do these young people have nowadays?Sabine Stein’s work “Silent spaces” shows a new photographic approach to the cityof Beirut, its stories and its future perspectives. The pictures of Lebanon in our mindare coined by war or violence. Sabine Stein, however, looked for everyday situationsand scenes to break through these stigmatas.
