NEURON Description

A flexible and powerful simulator of neurons and networks NEURON is a simulation environment for modeling individual neurons and networks of neurons. It provides tools for conveniently building, managing, and using models in a way that is numerically sound and computationally efficient. NEURON is particularly well-suited to problems that are closely linked to experimental data, especially those that involve cells with complex anatomical and biophysical properties.NEURON is cross-platform and will run on all popular hardware platforms under OS X, MSWin (98 or later), UNIX, and Linux, and on parallel hardware including Beowulf clusters, the Cray XT3, and the the IBM Blue Gene. Here are some key features of "NEURON": · is a flexible and powerful simulator of neurons and networks · has important advantages over general-purpose simulators · helps users focus on important biological issues rather than purely computational concerns · has a convenient user interface · has a user-extendable library of biophysical mechanisms · has many enhancements for efficient network modeling · offers customizable initialization and simulation flow control · is widely used in neuroscience research by experimentalists and theoreticians · is well-documented and actively supported · is free, open source, and runs on (almost) everything What's New in This Release: · As of today, the multicore version (which is currently version 7.0) has become the svn trunk and thus is now the main development thread. If all goes well, from this date forward the single thread version 6.2 will only be maintained for bug fixes. This announcement has immediate import for those users who get the alpha version or the latest development code from the Subversion repository. It also means that, in the not too distant future, users will be able to harness the full computing power of their hardware for executing simulations, regardless of whether NEURON is executing on a single core or a multicore machine.
