Mac Prop Description

MacProp is a Propagation Forecasting application for the Macintosh MacProp is a Propagation Forecasting application for the Macintosh. MacProp calculates the Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) for propagation between your location and over 2500 points over the entire Earth, and displays them on a convenient map.Main features of Mac Prop:Make sure you set up your Preferences (found in the Edit menu). Set your geographic location (EAST longitude and NORTH latitude). Remeber, for those of us in North America, this means entering the longitude as a negative number. Also enter your offset from UTC (-5 for EST, -4 for EDT, etc). Finally, enter either the current Sunspot Number (SSN) or Solar Flux. This information is stored in a file in your Preferences folder. The Solar Flux is transmitted by WWV/WWVH at 18 minutes past each hour on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz. MacProp uses an algorithm to convert the Solar Flux to the SSN.Selecting Update (from the Update menu) will re-compute the MUFs and update the display. Please note that calculating the MUF is a very computationally-intensive task. It requires about 1 minute on my Quadra 700, for example, and about three seconds on my Power Computing PowerCenterPro. Your milage may vary. The top line (above the world map) displays the time of the last MUF calculation (not the present time) in UTC, the Sunspot Number (SSN) you entered in the Preferences, and the coordinates of the cursor above the map along with the MUF and FOT at that location. Move the cursor around the map, and you can find the MUF to that area of the world. Each location of the map is shaded. The darker the shading, the higher the MUF.Mac Prop's MUF represents the maximum frequency the program can use. You can also use another frequency: FOT (Frequency of Optimum Traffic), which is usually about 85% of the MUF.Requirements of Mac Prop:Color Monitor capable of at least 640 by 480 resolutionLimitations of Mac Prop:Runs on Mac OS Classic only
