Basic Format Description
A template for developing new formats. Basic Format is a great GEDitCOM II format designed as a template for developing new formats. Basic Format takes care of most of the behind-the-sign tasks (i.e., dealing with links, displaying multimedia, handling family links, etc.) freeing you to concentrate on the display of the genealogy data. To start writing a format, download this format, edit in the GEDitCOM Editor, and consult the documentation in the format for how to proceed.After downloading, the format should automatically expand itself into a user interface format (extension .gfrmt). If it appears instead as an archive file (extension .zip), simply double click on the file and it will expand to a user interface format file.To install in GEDitCOM II's "Open Format" submenu, the file needs to be placed in one of two places: ~/Library/Application Support/GEDitCOMII/Formats: The "~" means to start in your Home folder, open the Library folder, open the Application Support folder, open the GEDitCOMII folder, and finally open the Formats folder. If you put the user interface in that final folder, it will appear in the "Open Formats" submenu in the "--User Formats--" section and will be visible only when running in your user account; or /Library/Application Support/GEDitCOMII/Formats: To find this folder, start at the root of your main hard disk, open the Library folder, open the Application Support folder, open the GEDitCOMII folder, and finally open the Formats folder. If you put the user interface in that final folder, it will appear in the "Open Formats" submenu in the "--System Formats--" section and will be visible to all user accounts.If GEDitCOM II is already running, choose the "Refresh Formats" menu command in the "Open Format" submenu and the new format will appear in the list of available formats.
