mksfv Description

Free and open source command-line hash file checker/creator mksfv is a powerful and easy to use command-line tool for dealing with hash files. Hash files have become a popular, and in many cases essential, part of any package available for download over the internet. They provide the end user a simple and reliable way in which to verify the integrity of the data that they downloaded. Hash files can also be very useful for putting on data CDs or DVDs so that their integrity can be checked at a later date (or simply to reliably verify that they have burned correctly). What's worse than restoring a backup of files from a backup that has deteriorated and developed random errors?mksfv supports the most common hash files (all the ones that I've come accross) found on the web at the time of writing, but others are easily added if you submit a feature request. Currently the supported hash file types are SFV/CRC32 (.sfv), MD5 (.sfv), SHA-1 (.sha1), and SHA-256 (.sha2).mksfv is provided with two AppleScript droplets for use on Mac OS X, which provide drag and drop support for creating and verifying hash files. With these, a hash file can be created for a collection of files or for a folder by simply dragging the file(s)/folder(s) onto the 'Create Hash File(s)' droplet, and similarly hash file(s) can be verified by simply dragging them (or even just the folder or disk that contains them) onto the 'Check Hash File(s)' droplet.Even without the scripts, mksfv can do most of the work for you, with its ability to search folders recursively (allowing it to automatically check any hash files it finds within a given directory hierarchy), and simple command-line options (see the 'Examples' section at the end of mksfv's usage page - displayed when mksfv is run without any parameters).mksfv can deal with a very large numbers of files and it is very fast at creating and verifying them.NOTE: mksfv is licensed and distributed under the terms of the BSD License and Public Domain. What's New in This Release: · Supports checking (but not creating) MD5 files that use an alternate layout, where the filename appears first, followed by a colon, then the hash value. However, these files must be renamed with a .md5 extension in order to be seen by mksfv. · Fixed a bug in the "Check Hash File(s)" script that previously caused it to reject individual hash files being dropped onto it.
