jlab Description

A scientific open-source programming environment coded in Java The jLab environment aims to provide a Matlab/Scilab like scientific computing platform that is supported by scripting engines implemented in the Java language. Actually, in the current implementation of jLab there coexist the four scripting engines, mentioned above. The GroovySci seems currently to be the preferred choice, since it is much faster, can execute directly Java code using only the familiar Java packaging rules, and is feature rich language, i.e. Groovy enhanced with Matlab style dynamic matrix operations and surrounding support environment. Also, jLab supports and a direct Java scripting mode, the JavaSci mode, that is the faster one, because it utilizes the javac compiler to produce effective Java numerical code. The GroovySci libraries can all be used in JavaSci mode, however JavaSci lacks many convenient high-level expressive constructs that one can find in GroovySci (because it is Java).Since jLab is coded in pure Java the build from source process is much cleaner, faster, platform independent and less error prone than similar C/C++/Fortran based open source environments (e.g. Scilab, Octave). Also the facilities of the Java language for distributed computation will be explored to speed up scientific computations. Requirements: · Java
