The Bitcoin digital currency has become very popular from its launch in 2009 and more and more services accept this type of currency as payment. The best part is that you can use your computer’s processing power to start “mining” and get coins, without having to exchange “real” money. To get started, you must make sure that you have installed on your Mac an application that can handle mining and eventually set up a mining wallet and join a mining pool. Using this command line tool is recommended if you do not want to waste the 90MB of space required by MacMiner and you think that you are able to work with the Terminal. At the same time, you are able to use bfgminer right out of the package without having to deal with complex installation processes. Simply unzip the package and place the resulting folder in a location of your choice. The next step is to launch the Terminal app, navigate to the bfgminer bin folder by using the “cd” command (“cd ~/bfgminer-3.10-mac/bfgminer/bin” for example) and launch the app using the “./bfgminer” command. Initially you will be prompted to provide at least one pool server, but if you would like to see all the the app has to offer, you can use the “./bfgminer --help” command. To conclude, bfgminer is a nice command line utility that enables you to mine for bitcoins, as long as you are able to make due without using a graphical user interface.
