In addition, Vocalex reminds you after a certain time to revise vocabulary you learnt earlier. Thanks to the fact that there are no translations, learning takes place in a more authentic way meaning you remember more of what you learn. Here are some key features of "Vocalex English": · You can browse around the program by way of a perspicuous menu and see which words and exercises are available. Words are collected in sets of eight and sub-divided into different categories: Basics, Animals, Vehicles, Leisure, Geography, Home, People, Food, Nature and Society. There are 206 sets in total to choose from. If you do not want to use a ready to use set then you can choose the words yourself and create your own set. · You can choose between 12 different exercise sets to practice the words. An exercise set comprises of a number of exercises and are arranged for a specific purpose, for example a first introduction of the word, revision or spelling practice. Word practice always starts with a presentation of the selected word, thereafter a set of exercises asks the user to answer questions in order to learn the word. If you prefer, you can choose the exercises yourself by creating your own exercise set. · Firstly, each word is shown to the user with text, picture and sound in order to understand what the word means and how it is pronounced. Words are explained by way of pictures meaning there is no translation from one language to another and learning is more natural and lasting. · The first exercises where the user himself is active focus on passive vocabulary, in other words learning what a word means when you see or hear it. This ability can be improved by way of showing a picture of an item and allowing the user to choose the correct name for the item from among a number of alternatives. · This type of exercise can be completed in another way by showing many pictures at the same time whilst only writing and reading out aloud one word. The user must then mark the picture of the target word. This exercise can be made harder by reading out the word without showing it in writing. This is a good listening comprehension exercise. · You have to use the learnt words for them to become a part of your active vocabulary instead of only listening to them being used. A very good exercise for this is spelling practice, where you can see a picture of an item and must actively decide what it is called and spell it. This type of exercise is one of the hardest and most effective in Vocalex. · When you have completed word practice the results are published. You can see how many answers were right or wrong for each word and the results are saved so that you can continue practicing at a later date. Consider that you do not learn new words by practicing them once. It is important to revise what you have learnt in order to properly remember. · A very useful method when learning a new language, or in this case acquiring vocabulary for a new language, is to revise the words for the first time after just 10 minutes. Then wait a day and revise the same words again. Next, wait a week before you revise again until your final revision after a month. Using this method you will remember the words you have practiced very well. The first revision is the most important, although you will achieve the best results if you perform all revision according to the above. Vocalex includes a function which reminds you to revise the words you have practiced after one day, two days, a week and a month.
