Tunnels SQL requests through firewalls over HTTP by implementing a special JDBC driver Universal SQL Gateway is an open source and free JDBC driver/proxy combination able to add JDBC support to a firewall by transporting any JDBC protocol over HTTP.Universal SQL Gateway provides a common interface to access all sorts of JDBC and ODBC data sources in heterogenous environments over a single interface. The Universal SQL Gateway is built upon a modern infrastructure (HTTP, JDBC, application servers and RowSets). The gateway acts as a broker that translates client API calls into a common Format and Protocol (FAP), transports them over HTTP, and then maps them to the appropriate server calls (and vice versa). Universal SQL Gateway provides standard SQL interfaces (small footprint JDBC driver or language independent XML interface) eliminating the need for installing different sorts of database drivers on the client side. Besides it provides a common way to channel SQL requests over firewalls since HTTP is not blocked by most port filters. The server acts as an active firewall component by routing the SQL statements over a single point, giving the administrator the opportunity to log and limit access to certain data sources.
