SoftPear aims to create compatibility software between the IBM PC and the Apple Macintosh architecture The SoftPear Project aims to create compatibility software between the IBM PC and the Apple Macintosh architecture.With Mac OS X, an excellent operating system is available, unfortunately it runs only on Macintosh hardware. Therefore this project seeks to create compatibility layers to run Mac OS X and Mac OS X Software on IBM PC hardware.We do not develop an emulator for PowerPC Macintosh machines (like "PearPC", or like "Basilisk" or "UAE" for other platforms) and we do not help you in running pirated versions of Mac OS X on your PC! Instead, the project has more similarities to Digital's "FX!32", FreeBSD's "Linux Binary Compatbility" and "WINE".The SoftPear project is an open project. Everybody should feel invited to contribute and there is no strict development roadmap to follow. Instead, we try to achieve the project goals by evaluating a varitey of different approaches. The SoftPear project streamlines the different development efforts and offers a platform for information sharing between the developers.SoftPear makes it possible to run *some* Mac OS X command line tools on· Linux/i386· FreeBSD/i386· Darwin/PowerPC (Mac OS X)This is achieved using· a Mach-O file format loader· a user mode PowerPC interpreter· a libc wrapperIt is painfully slow at the moment, and it cannot run much more than· gzip· zip· unzip· echoat the moment, but it is a start. The ultimate goal is to run any Mac OS X software on Linux/i386 (and possibly on other architectures and operating systems) using Apple's original binary UI libraries.
