Pedigree-Draw creates annotated genealogical diagrams (also known as "family trees" or "genograms") of pedigreed family data. It includes facilities for creating and editing individual data records, a extensive symbol repetoire to display individual genetic and demographic attributes, and a broad range of parameters governing the structure and appearance of the pedigree diagram. Although designed primarily to handle human data, Pedigree-Draw is also capable of dealing with issues characteristic of captive animal populations, such as extensive multiple mating and familial inbreeding. It uses a standard tab-delimited ASCII file format that enables the importing of data from most database and spreadsheet programs. Pedigree-Draw was developed originally for use in analyzing population data gathered for biomedical and genetic research projects, and to aid the management of captive animal colonies. It's been applied to other fields as well, including genetic counseling and life science education. Although not designed as a genealogical database per se, the program can be used to collect and edit biographical data found in the course of family history research, including pictures of family members, and display or print those data in standard hierarchical formats suitable for publication. Output may also be saved in Portable Document Format (PDF) for distribution via the Internet, or posting on World-Wide Web sites.
