MacNavAid Description

MacNavAid - A litthe program that calculates latitude and longitude distances and also locates them. MacNavAid is a little program that will give you one of two sets of information. If you give it a starting position (latitude and longitude) and a heading and distance for it to "travel", it will give you the ending position. If you give it a starting and ending position it will computer the heading and distance you would have to travel to go from start to end. Simple! It defaults to the South and East for Longitude and Latitude but you can change the this in the preferences. The circular sliders are the really cool creation of the guys at Stick Software. See the About box for copyright information. Their web site is www.sticksoftware.com. Try holding down the shift key while use use the slider to select a heading. In all the testing I've done, it is very accurate but I didn't write the formulae used in this program. I found them on this web site - http://williams.best.vwh.net/avform.htm. Ed Williams has listed many different types of formulae used in aviation navigation and lists several examples for people to get a clear understanding of how to use them. It is well worth a visit if you are interested in the maths behind navigation. Since I didn't come up with these formulae myself, I can't vouch for their accuracy and as such I can't make any guarantee's as to the accuracy of this software. All I can tell you is that it seems accurate in my testing but if you are stupid enough to use a piece of freeware to do any navigation planning then you deserve to get lost and die ;-).Just in case you missed the general idea of the previous paragraph, and so that there can be no ambiguity in this litigious society we live in, DON'T USE THIS SOFTWARE FOR NAVIGATION IN THE REAL WORLD, THAT'S WHAT MAPS ARE FOR. Always use your map with your protractor and scale rule. Only use this software to give a quick approximate.Comments are appreciated. Please remember that this software won't be updated (or at least that's the plan). MacNavAid is basically a test designed for a class used on a larger project and I thought that some of you might like to see how far it is from your house to work for example.
