Knock only works with iPhone 4s or later running iOS 7 or newer and Macs supporting Bluetooth Low Energy. Knock is an innovative application for your iPhone and Mac desktop computer that provides a safe and fast method to sing into your iMac or MacBook. Basically, Knock makes it possible to knock twice on your iPhone in order to unlock your Mac computer (when it displays the log in screen) that is close enough to communicate with your iPhone via Bluetooth. Important to note is that Knock only supports iPhone 4s and up running iOS 7 or later and a Mac that comes with Bluetooth Low Energy (some of them are 2011 or newer) support. Thus, you will be able to use your iPhone to disarm your Mac from a close distance. Whenever you knock twice on your iPhone, your Mac will be magically unlocked. Obviously, you will have to install the Knock application for iPhone, which costs a few dollars on the Mac App Store. After installing the Mac desktop app, you are required to connect the two apps by configuring a password and other settings. The two applications use the Bluetooth Low Energy technology, which usually has a range of 160 ft (50 m), in order create a secure and private connection. Your Mac detects the iPhone you’re carrying when you get close enough. You will know when it’s safe to knock twice on your iPhone when the ring around your personal avatar pulses green. In the process, Knock performs a few security checks. Just as you would knock on a door or use the car alarm device, your Mac will be magically unlocked after knocking twice on your iPhone. The Knock iPhone app enters your password on your Mac with lightning speed. Furthermore, Knock for Mac uses the 1024-bit RSA encryption algorithm for ultra-strong security. In other words, only your own iPhone is able unlock your Mac via Knock.
