There are two parts to this utility: the first is a chart displaying the characters and how they are pronounced in English characters; the second is a test screen where you can do a test to see how well you have learnt your characters.The Japanese have four character sets. One is the familar Roman characters that English speakers will know. One is Kanji which consists of thousands of characters influenced by Chinese. Then there are two phonetic character sets both consisting of about 50 characters. These are Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is a more traditional way of writing and is usually used as a pronunciation guide.Katakana is a more modern script and is often used to write the pronunciations of words foreign to Japan.
