CyNote Description

Free cyber laboratory notebook for biologists and bioinformaticists CyNote is an open source and free laboratory notebook using version control system for independent date-time stamping (which may be a form of notarization) and backups, in order to ensure record auditing and accountability.CyNote aims to be a electronic research record management system that conforms to record-keeping standards of physical notebooks based on 3 principles:· Notebooks can be setup for encryption and routine backup on secured data centres (such as Amazon S3)· Date-time stamping of notebooks are performed by remote systems (immediate date-time stamp upon upload)· Page edits are generally disallowed. However, if page edits are forcefully done, it will be tracked and date-time stamped using source code management systems (such as Subversion) At the same time, research tools can be developed as plugins into CyNote and records can be tracked immediately; thus, saving the effort in transposing data across systems. Here are some key features of "CyNote": · Able to create multiple notebooks · Users required to log-in before using CyNote · User can notarize (affix a signature based on login) a specific entry · Entire database (all the notebooks) can be backed-up onto a FTP server and date-time stamped · Each (entry) notebook page can have multiple comments and/or file insertions · Each entry and comment is date-time stamped using UTC time · The authorship of each entry and comment is logged · Calculate annealing temperature of PCR primers · Transcribes from DNA to RNA · Reverse-transcribes from RNA to DNA · Translates from DNA/RNA to amino acid sequence · Performs amino acid distribution, pI, MW, aromaticity, instability, flexibility, and secondary structure fractions on amino acid sequence · Perform similarity search using NCBI BLAST.
