nFlux Slackware 13/current i686 Description

The nFlux Slackware Current version is the largest of the nFlux line at sub-700MB with a similar application set to the Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 10.04 nFlux version. The Slax specific boot parameters, persistent CD/USB info and Slax info can all be found at these links. Slax boot cheatcodes: http://www.slax.org/documentation_boot_cheatcodes.php Slax persistent CD/USB: The kernel for this RC1 version was sourced from PureOS: http://pureos.org/index.php?lang=english ?nFlux is a Linux OS created from a triumvirate of the Best Linux distro’s available now, including Slackware Current(13), Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and Debian Squeeze! All are LiveCD’s that can run from CD, USB, and Hard Drive in frugal persistent mode or traditional installed-to-Hard Drive mode (Slackware HD install postponed, but manual install is available). The only aims of nFlux will be to broaden the knowledge and usefulness of the Fluxbox Desktop in three of the best Linux distro’s available. All three will contain these “standard” applicatons Terminals: rxvt-unicode, xterm, terminator, and Terminal (xfce4-terminal) Network: Firefox 3.6.3 (Ubuntu/Slack) Iceweasel 3.5.9 (Debian) Flash 10+ Irssi Xchat Gftp Links Lynx Irssi Wifi-Radar wireless-tools WICD or Network-Manager aircrack-ng wireshark Editors, etc: Kompozer Leafpad Nano Gvim File Managers, etc: PCMANFM Rox-filer MidnightCommander Multimedia: Audacious Alsamixergui Alsaplayer Gxine(Slack) isomaster Graveman Graphics: Gimp Imagemagick Geeqie Office: Abiword Gaiksaurus Plus there are misc applications and utilities specific to each OS, like sbopkg for Slackware and Ubuntu’s many “helper” apps and settings, etc. As the name suggests, nFlux will always be “in flux”; as the distro evolves every attempt will be made to add or remove applications, scripts, etc in a effort to make each of the three varieties as similar to each other in form and function, without losing their identities. By size, the Debian version will always be the smallest because it doesn’t need many “helper” applications Ubuntu uses that are almost inseparable from Ubuntu. The Ubuntu version is very similar to the Debian version, except it has many apps used solely for Ubuntu, plus any needed depends, such as language pack-writing-en, etc.The Slackware Current version will probably always be the biggest, near 700MB, because of Slackware’s unique binary/source makeup. Thus the Slackware version features all compiling and development tools needed to make packages, along with SBopkg and src2pkg. Install, etc info: Install to hard drive: This slackware version has no hard drive installer app; but, there is a manual method that I have used many times and is documented here http://multidistro.com/distros/slack-slax-based/HowTo Also note that the how-to is for experienced users familiar with Lilo. Grub2 is installed also, but you would have to manually setup everything which really isn’t that hard. (Only for Ubuntu/Debian versions) Note: it is best to login to root desktop, create a user, grant user certain admin priveledges and edit /etc/sudoers; logout of root desktop and login to user desktop you created, then run remastersys-installer or Ubuntu’s ubiquity installer. Install to USB: Follow the links above about slax info as this version was made with LinuxLiveScripts and thus runs as Slax does. Slax 6.1.2 modules, etc are not compatible because Slax is 12.2 and this version is slackware/current. However, you can easily convert slack 13 pkg’s into slax modules. Window Manager: Fluxbox Display Manager: Gnome Display Manager GDM User Names & Passwords! Slackware version user name: guest password: guest username: root password: toor ?Its current as of 04/28 so it has Xorg 1.76, etc and newest upgrades. Configure X? a script named vidconfig sourced from Absolute Linux will try to autoconfigure x for you if you answer "yes" at xconfigure screen. If you choose No it will use Vesa driver. There are three ways to startx X 1) after logging in type in "startx" 2) after logging in type in "slim", and Slim will run desktop 3) after logging in type in "gdm", and GDM will run desktop. There are some bugs etc but all apps work fine and haven't had any program crashes, etc Please if any questions or comments, post them here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/announcing-nflux-linux;-a-fluxbox-oriented-trinity-of-distros-804611/ What's New in This Release: · Its current as of 05/05 so it has Xorg 1.77, etc and newest upgrades. · New Quax kernel (2.6.33.3-qx1-nFlux) · Added Gnumeric and fbpanel, and better fluxbox menu integration.
